You may have heard of the new hotness called passkeys. I think it will be a good alternative for those that tend to reuse bad passwords across multiple sites. Though, those of us that are a bit more privacy minded may take head to using passkeys. Mostly because those of us concerned with privacy tend to not like putting our secrets in a walled-garden system. So while passkeys are a good move privacy/security wise for the general public, I imagine most of use are going to want to use passkeys in a system we can export and transfer to and from. That excludes some of the big players pushing passkeys today, like apple and google. History tells us they’ll try to lock you in, and it makes sense to do so from a business aspect. Make it as difficult as possible for your customer’s to leave for a competitor, and they’re less likely to leave. So if you decide to go try out passkeys, and it isn’t a bad idea to do so, I’d suggest going with a provider that you can take across platforms and devices. Maybe your password manager of choice supports passkeys, or maybe you go with a dedicated passkey system that allows you to backup/export/import your passkeys. In any case, make sure you can switch later for a better option, as this is still new and better options are likely to come.
